Sporthorses and Ponies

At Sophora Park Stud, our breeding programme is focused on producing quality sport horses and sport ponies with trainable temperaments, athletic ability, and versatile conformation. We aim to breed horses that are well suited to competitive young riders, lady riders, and petite adults, combining performance potential with an enjoyable, willing nature.

Our goal is to produce elegant, hack-sized horses with excellent rideability, natural athleticism, and scope over fences. We place a strong emphasis on temperament, movement, and trainability to meet the growing demand for versatile horses that can excel in eventing, show jumping, and dressage.

The cornerstone of our breeding programme is our sport-type Welsh Cob stallion, Westie Blue River. Alongside his proven success as a sire, he has recently been started under saddle and in harness, further demonstrating the rideability, versatility, and kind temperament that are central to our breeding philosophy. His outstanding conformation, athletic movement, and gentle nature make him an ideal foundation sire.

Our foundation broodmare, Sophora's Bellamie, is a Thoroughbred mare retired from racing. She is by Embellish, a son of the legendary Savabeel, whose progeny are renowned throughout New Zealand and Australia for their athleticism, durability, and competitive spirit. This exceptional bloodline contributes strength, quality movement, and a naturally athletic frame that lends itself well to modern sport horse breeding.

Bellamie is currently being retrained using classical riding principles, demonstrating her willing temperament, rideability, and natural ability to collect. Her elegant conformation, ground-covering movement, and expressive floating trot make her an exciting foundation mare, bringing together proven Thoroughbred performance genetics and the qualities sought after in today's versatile sport horses.
